What could I do to generate more readership? I have a lot of traffic on the sister site Ask Aunt B but not on WP.
It’s not an emergency and your answer, of course should be at your leisure.
Thanks!
While it is not exactly a WordPress issue, I will gladly answer it. There are numerous points t consider:
1. The blogger site and the WordPress sites have identical content, which is frowned by search engines, resulting in one or both the pages getting less than favorable placement in the SERP (which is the search engines results page).
2. It appears that the blogger site is older than that of WordPress, hence the difference in both traffic and page rank (which is how Google determines the importance of a site, the higher the PR the better).
3. From a search perspective both sites are good, header followed by content followed by sidebar and footer, however, visually (for humans) the blogger layout is easy to work with, wider, content is uninterrupted and flows well from top to bottom.
With these in mind, you need to ask yourself the following questions:
1. Why do you need two identical sites?
2. Do you really need to move to WordPress, if so, are you OK with loosing/shutting down the blogger site?
3. Have you considered moving to a self hosted WordPress site that you will have complete control over? And don’t forget the traffic and advertisement potential.
Hope that helps!
We use WordPress to run our intranet (not accessibly from www), we are running version 2.1, do I need to upgrade to 2.8? If so, what is the probability of it breaking our site?
Usually I would say yes, you need to upgrade, but to be honest, if the version you are using works for you and there is no threat from the web (since there is no access to it from www) I see no reason to upgrade unless you know of a feature in version 2.8 that you must absolutely have.
I would at the least consider the two points below before upgrading from 2.1 to 2.8.2:
1. The database structure, I do not believe the straight conversion from 2.1 to 2.8.2 without intermediate version conversion will yield the same result as going from 2.1 to say 2.3, 2.5, 2.6 and so on.
2. The theme you are using on your intranet will/might need to be tweaked.
Hope that helps!
I think we will go with what we have until it breaks!!!
Hi Sunny:
Not sure if this is a WP or theme challenge. I use Aligned for my site theme. When you go to my site, you’ll see that I’ve added images into my posts (makes them more interesting). Unfortunately in the post excerpt, each image has an “Attached file” link line with the image name at the bottom. I’d like to get rid of these links and lines. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thks
Ron
Neither, a plugin called “Attachment Manager” which I can tell you are using is adding this list of attachment to the end of each post (irrespective of the post being an excerpt or full content). I have not used this plugin, there might be options to disable the list feature. If not, ask yourself if you really need a plugin to do what WP might be able to do?
Hi Sunny:
You’re awesome. That was so easy … once you told me what to look for. Thank you VERY much
Ron
Hi Sunny:
One other quick question? Has anyone implemented a second layer of menu navigation with the Aligned theme?
If so, is it complex or fairly easy?
Ron
I thank you so much for taking the time to check things out. The issues you’ve listed all have considerable merit.
It’s my feeling that a vast majority of WP users, stay on WP thus the WP Aunt B site and it’s duplicate content, of course.
I must agree w/you though I’m just not sure how to remedy the situation. As it stands, I’d hate to give up either site. In this instance, I’ll sit in my own sh*t and complain about how bad it smells, lol!
Thanks
Hi Nice to electronically meet you. I am using the WordPress Fall Season theme for my website http://www.misociety.com.au The site is now two years old with approx 2,500+ posts/pages. The site is now way too narrow for the content and I also with to add Google Adsense and need the extra space. Would be grateful for any help. Regards MiSociety
Hi, i was interested in using “redcarpet wp theme” i loved its video and photo gallery,
when we post pics, videos in our normal posts (with setting) all of them will auto populate in video and photo gallery.
but the problem is their DEMO is not working fine and not reponse from them after i post queries to them….
do u know any similar theme does the same job…
auto aggreate pics and videos to a new page…
thanks
@ india4g
The demo seem to be working, the auto aggregate feature can be ported over to any theme, it is independent of the theme itself.
Hi, I am using Aligned as my theme as well. I created a flickr account and tagged all my photos as ‘amberwilburn’ and then went into the sidebar.php and changed the tag= to tag=amberwilburn and my photos aren’t showing up. I followed your instructions and initially changed it to tag=sandwiches and those show up but when I try to put in my unique tag it doesn’t work. Thoughts? Thanks so much!!
@ Amber
I am not sure why that would happen, how long ago did you set up your Flickr account? I see that the tags are intact at http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/amberwilburn/ so no reason for it to not show. Sometimes it takes a day or two for it to show up. I say change the tag in script and wait.
Yes, I set up my flickr page a couple of weeks after I set up my blog, and then I tagged the photos the same day that I changed the script so that is probably the problem. I will change the tag in script and wait and see what happens. Thanks so much for the reply!
Okay, I just changed it and now they are showing up! Thanks so much!!
Hey, this is a cool post. I hope you’re still helping people with questions, cause I’ve got a doozy.
I just developed a new theme for http://www.freelancereview.net — the problem is, the sidebar on the right displays wrong on the homepage (index.php) but displays correctly on single post pages (single.php).
To see the problem in action, visit:
Broken – http://www.freelancereview.net
Working – http://www.freelancereview.net/vinta…ebrity-photos/
To add to the weirdness, when I am logged in as Admin, the sidebar works great, even on the homepage, but when I am logged out like a regular reader the sidebar is wrong on the homepage and displayed at the bottom of the post….
I’d love some help if you get a chance!
